2012 High Hoops Girls Basketball Camp
JOIN THE FUN!
High Hoops is a service learning project sponsored by Crystal Lake High School Students teaching young girls in our community the fundamentals of basketball and team building skillsfreeof charge.
After being out on the playground on wet, snowy mornings, students come into the building and put wet gloves in their coat pockets or on the floor of their lockers and, unfortunately, they have no way of drying out before the next recess. They also end up with snow in their boots, leaving the kids with nothing to wear but wet socks.
Although we are hoping to rectify that situation by allowing students to hang up their mittens to dry, we would appreciate it if you would please put an extra pair of mittens and socks in a zip-lock bag in your child's backpack, so they will have a spare to change into in the event they get wet. We will put the wet pair back in the zip-lock bag to be sent home with your child.
Thank you so much for your help keeping your children warm and dry.
Health Tips
Nutrition Tips Breakfast on the Go. If McDonald's is your morning stop, order the 290-calorie Fruit and Maple Oatmeal with 5 g. of protein and 5 g. fiber. Skip the brown sugar and request light cream to cut another 50 calories and slash the fat in half. If you choose the Egg McMuffin, request it cheese-free and it's just 250 calories and 9 g. fat with 15 g. protein.
Grade Your Food. Have everyone at the dinner table take three bites of all the (healthy) foods on their plate and give each one a grade (A-F). Note the preferences. Serve the favorites more often and find creative ways to jazz up the less popular healthy foods.
Cast Your Vote. Create some food-friendly conversation at the dinner table and play a game to find some new healthy foods to serve at meals. Have everyone contribute to coming up with a list of 5 or 6 new healthy foods they are interested in trying. Give everyone three votes and have them vote their top three choices for new foods to try.
During the weeks of March 5th-16th, students in grades three, four, and five will be taking the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT).
*Students in third grade will be tested in Reading and Mathematics.
*Students in fourth grade will be tested in Reading, Mathematics and Science.
*Students in fifth grade will be tested in Reading and Mathematics.
School District 47 reviews the results, along with information from our local assessments, in order to help us improve our school program.
Classroom Interruptions
In an effort to help classroom teachers instruct our students, we are attempting to eliminate as many classroom interruptions as possible. If items need to be dropped off at school, please bring them to the office and we will have the student come down during recess, lunch time or at the end of the day. We also ask that doctor appointments be scheduled before or after school whenever possible. Thank you for your assistance in this regard.
Implementation of Tdap Vaccination
This fall, students entering sixth and ninth grades will be required to provide proof of Tdap vaccination along with the school physical forms that are also required for these grades.
Implementation of Tdap Vaccination is a Requirement.
In order to promote and foster healthier student choices and to a be mindful of the many students in District 47 with severe food allergies, we respectfully request that parents provide only non-food items when celebrating birthdays (book donations, pencils, stickers, etc.). Additionally, parents are strongly encouraged to provide healthy food choices for classroom celebrations and holiday parties.
This request will be effective as of January 4, 2012. We thank you for your full cooperation with this new district policy.
Memory Book
Don't be left out! Be sure to place your order for the 2011-2012 West School Memory Book! Orders forms will be sent home soon, and they are due back at school on or before February 25th. No late orders will be accepted and no extra inventory will be kept on hand to sell. The book sells for $11.00.

We are excited to announce the dates of our Family Library Nights for this year. All of these evenings will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please mark your calendar for Family Library Night fun: February 16th, March 8th and April 19th.
2011 - 2012 Lunch Prices
Pre-paying for lunch tickets is the easiest way for students (especially our little ones) to get their lunches in the West School cafeteria.
Ten-day tickets are $21.00 and twenty-day tickets are $42.00. Please make checks payable to Crystal Lake School District 47. If you are buying a single day ticket ($2.10), please try to avoid sending a bag of loose change.
Finally, if you are having lunch with your child, please do not bring food for other children. Thank you!
Cell Phone Restrictions
Our crossing guards, arrival and dismissal supervisors have noticed an increase in the number of parents who are talking or texting on their cell phones while dropping off and/or picking up their children before and after school.
Please be advised that according to Illinois State Law, when approaching a marked school crossing zone between 7 am and 4 pm, on days when schools in operation and when school children are present, a driver must stop all wireless phone communications, reduce his/her speed to 20 mph and yield to any children or adults crossing in the crosswalk area.
The 2010 law aims to increase student safety and reduce accidents caused by distracted drivers.
We appreciate your cooperation and diligence in this regard. Thank you.

Section 5.13 reads, "It shall be unlawful for any dog, cat, or other animal even though on a leash, to be present at or upon any school premises, public playground park, public beach, or public swimming pool, unless permission is granted by the agency which has jurisdiction over same. The provisions of his Section shall not apply to working support dogs."
